Hogue Sibling Photographs

This post features two photos of my great grandmother Dicey Louisa "Lou" (Hogue) Chritton with her siblings and their spouses.

First, a photo taken prior to 1938. This was almost certainly taken in the vicinity of Concordia, Kansas, where most of the subjects lived. The notations on the photo are a bit odd, so my attribution of names to faces is certainly subject to critique.

Here are the listings as shown on the back of the photograph. First row (l-r) – Uncle Charley, Uncle Lee, Uncle George, Dad, Uncle Al, <Not listed>. Second row (l-r) – Aunt Pet, Aunt Lide, Aunt Jane, Aunt Effie, Aunt Amy, Mother, Aunt Ell.

The handwriting on the photograph is not my grandfather's. It appears to be a woman's writing. I assume it must have been written by one of my grandfather's sisters who provided the photo to my grandfather.

The listing by best attribution: First row (l-r) – John Charles “Charley” Hogue, Leander “Lee” Wright, George Washington Hogue, Albert Herman “Al” Chritton, Henry Albert “Al” Hogue, Unknown (possibly Robert Conn, John Garst, or Steward Dowler). Second row (l-r) – Elizabeth Etta “Pet” (Hogue) Wright,
Aunt Lide, Sarah Jane “Jane” (Hogue) Dowler, Effie Florence (Crum) Hogue, Amy Blanche (Chritton) Hogue, Dicey Louisa “Lou” (Hogue) Chritton, Mary Ellen “Ell” (Hogue) Garst.

It's apparent that the second photo was taken quite a bit later. Four Hogue siblings and two wives are shown.

The notes on the back of this photo were written by me based on identification from my father or grandmother.

Front Row (l-r): Dicey Louisa "Lou" (Hogue) Chritton, Lide Hogue, Effie Hogue (wife of Charley Hogue).

Back Row (l-r): George Washington Hogue, John Charles "Charley" Hogue, Henry Albert "Al" Hogue.

The Hogue siblings were the children of Rebecca (Humphrey/Humphry) and Andrew Jackson Hogg. They were apparently all born in Madison County, Iowa. Their father died in 1877 and their mother remarried a local widower, Samuel Garst, in 1879. Samuel Garst had nine children of his own, and the younger children from both families lived for some time in the same house. This story is covered in more detail in my biography of Dicey Louisa "Lou" (Hogue) Chritton.

Although their parents spelled the family name Hogg, this entire generation seems to have used the spelling Hogue.

The Hogue siblings are:
  • William W. Hogue (1855 - ??)
  • Sarah Jane Hogue (July 15, 1857 - October 8, 1934) married Steward R. Dowler
  • Mary Ellen Hogue (April 29, 1859 - February 9, 1940) married John William Garst
  • Eliza Ann Hogue (January 4, 1861 - May 28, 1940) married Robert Conn
  • Andrew J. Hogue (Died in infancy)
  • John Charles  "Charley" Hogue (1869 - September 3, 1939) married Effie Florence Crum.
  • Elizabeth Etta "Pet" Hogue (June 30, 1868 - January 3, 1951) married Leander "Lee" Wright
  • George Washington Hogue (May 14, 1870 - June 11, 1948) married Hattie May Crum
  • Henry Albert "Al" Hogue (April 12, 1872 - November 17, 1941) married Amy Blanche Chritton
  • Dicey Louisa "Lou" Hogue (March 19, 1874 - November 9, 1950) married Albert Herman "Al" Chritton
