Biography

Dicey Louisa “Lou” Hogue was born on Thursday, March 19 1874, in Madison County, Iowa. Her parents were 43-year-old Andrew Jackson Hogg and 39-year-old Rebecca (Humphrey) Hogg. Andrew had been born in Virginia and Rebecca was born in Indiana.

She was known – at least as an adult – only by the name “Lou.” Her given name of Dicey Louisa (sometimes “Dicy”) was only discovered from genealogical research. Even her obituary mentioned only the name “Lou.”

Her family name also went through a transformation. Lou’s father spelled the family name Hogg. Lou and several of her siblings spelled it Hogue.

Lou’s siblings were William W. Hogg (age about 19), Sarah Jane Hogg (16), Mary Ellen Hogg (14), Eliza Ann Hogg (13), Andrew J. Hogg (died in infancy), John Charles Hogg (about 9), Elizabeth Etta “Pet” Hogg (5), George Washington Hogg (3), and Henry Albert “Al” Hogg (23 months).

Lou was only three years old when her father died in 1877 at age 47. In 1879 her mother married Samuel Garst, who had become a widower that same year. Her stepfather was born July 22 1833 or 1834 in Roanoake County, Virginia. He died on September 22, 1899 in Madison County, Iowa. His first marriage was to Nancy Ann Fowler, with whom he had nine children. The youngest of his children, Matilda Alice Garst, was two years younger than Lou. The family was blended, with siblings from the Hogg and Garst families living together. [i]

In fact, at some point around this time, Lou’s sister Mary Ellen Hogg married their stepbrother John William Garst, who was 15 years older than Mary Ellen. Since Mary Ellen would have been about 20 years old when her mother married John’s father, it is possible that the children married before the parents.

The Garst-Hogg clan is shown the next year in the 1880 Iowa Census. Samuel and Rebecca’s household included four Garst children and six Hogg kids.

At some point a significant part of the Hogg family moved to Cloud County, Kansas. Samuel and Rebecca Garst apparently stayed in Iowa, but several of Lou’s siblings, including John, George, and Henry are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cloud County.

Hogue siblings and spouses prior to 1938: First row (l-r) – John Charles “Charley” Hogue, Leander “Lee” Wright, George Washington Hogue, Albert Herman “Al” Chritton, Henry Albert “Al” Hogue, Unknown (possibly Robert Conn, John Garst, or Steward Dowler). Second row (l-r) – Elizabeth Etta “Pet” (Hogue) Wright, “Aunt Lide”, Sarah Jane “Jane” (Hogue) Dowler, Effie Florence (Crum) Hogue, Amy Blanche (Chritton) Hogue, Dicey Louisa “Lou” (Hogue) Chritton, Mary Ellen “Ell” (Hogue) Garst.
Lou was reportedly close to her brother Henry Albert “Al” Hogue, who also settled in Cloud County, Kansas. Later there was confusion in the family about the name of her husband, Albert Herman “Al” Chritton, with some family members thinking incorrectly that it might have actually been Henry Albert or Albert Henry. This was due, in part, to the use of the middle name Henry for their son Charles Henry Chritton. It seems far more likely that uncle Henry Albert Hogue was the actual source of the middle name, and that the similarity of “Henry Albert” and “Albert Herman” led to the confusion in later generations.

Around 1892, Lou married Albert Herman Chritton in Cloud County, Kansas. Al was about 32 years old and Lou was about 18 years old. The Hogue family was apparently well known to the Chrittons as Lou's brother Henry Albert Hogue was married to Al's niece, Amy Blanche Chritton.

By 1893, when their first child was born, Al and Lou were living in Aguilar, Colorado, a small coal mining and railroad town at the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains.  Ethel Chritton was born on April 5, 1893 in Aguilar. [Several census records indicate that Ethel was born in Kansas rather than Colorado, casting some doubt on the date of the move to Colorado.]

In 1895, the town of Aguilar established electrical power service.

In 1897, their first son, Earl Chritton, was born in Kansas. Another son, Lynn Chritton, was born in Aguilar on June 20, 1899.

Lou’s mother, Rebecca (Humphrey) Garst, died at age 64 on November 4, 1898.  She was buried under the name “Rebecca Hogg” in Peru Cemetery in Madison County, Iowa. A brief obituary was published in the November 16th edition of the Winterset Madisonian:

Mrs. Rebecca Garst died of heart disease Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church.

Lou’s stepfather, Samuel Garst, died the next year at age 65 on September 22, 1899, in Madison County, Iowa.

The Chritton family is recorded in the 1900 census, living in a house in Aguilar, Colorado. According to the census, Albert and Lou owned their house outright with no mortgage. Albert’s occupation was coalmine superintendent. (Strangely, his birthplace and his parents’ birthplace are all incorrectly listed as Pennsylvania. Lou’s birthplace is incorrectly listed as Kansas. The census lists the birthplace of Ethel and Earl as Kansas rather than Colorado, but it seems unwise to give much credence to this document’s assertions about birthplace.)[ii]

William "Bill" Chritton was born in Aguilar on July 26, 1902.

In 1903, Aguilar had a population of 1,200 with 59 businesses. The town installed streetlights along Main Street.

Tragedy struck in 1903 when their six-year-old son Earl died in Aguilar.

In November 20, 1906, Al’s father Joseph Washburn Chritton died at age 87 in his home near Denison, Texas. His obituary was published in the Dennison Daily Herald.

Two more daughters were born in Aguilar. Nellie Chritton was born on March 16, 1904 and Ora "Mae" Chritton was born on December 20, 1907.

The Chritton family (Name attributions are imperfect; solid identifications are marked with an *): First row (l-r) - Ruby Chritton, Charles "Charley" Chritton, Ora Mae "Mae" Chritton*,  Gladys Chritton. Second row (l-r) - Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Nellie Chritton, Dicey Louisa "Lou" Chritton*. Third row - Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, Albert "Al" Chritton*.
The 1910 census shows Albert and Lou living in the Aguilar area, but they returned to Concordia, Kansas, by the time the rest of their children were born. Their next daughter, Ruby Ellen Chritton, was born on April 5, 1911, followed by Gladys Chritton on September 11, 1913, and Charles Henry "Charley" Chritton on June 21, 1916.

Lou’s oldest daughter, Ethel Chritton had married Ray Dunbar by 1916, and their son, Raymond Earl Dunbar was born September 15, 1916, in Concordia Kansas.

By the 1920 census, Al and Lou had moved their family to Shannon County, Missouri. The family later moved to a farm near Olden and Pomona in Howell County, Missouri.

Albert Chritton, Jack Huscher, and
Lou (Hogue) Chritton.
Back in Concordia, another grandson, William Dunbar, was born to Ray and Ethel on June 13, 1922.

Lou’s daughter Nellie married James Edgar Fox before 1923. Their first child, Nellie “Marie” Fox was born on May 30, 1923, at Talmo, Kansas. Nellie and James had another daughter, Dorothy May Fox, on August 25, 1925 at Talmo, Kansas.

During the 1920s, Lou’s son Lynn married Freda Courser and had two daughters, Maxine and Leota. The marriage ended in divorce and little is known of the two granddaughters. Lynn remarried to Laura Fuller, presumably before the birth of Robert Lynn Chritton on September 9, 1927.

Ora “Mae” Chritton married Rollo Huscher prior to 1928. Their son, Jack Huscher, was born March 2, 1928, at Concordia, Kansas.

Granddaughter Margaret Dunbar was born to Ray and Ethel on October 2, 1931, in Torrance, California.

Nellie and James’ third daughter, Wilma “Jean” Fox, was born on July 9, 1932 at Hollis, Kansas.

Lou’s son Bill and his wife Margaret had a son, William Roy Chritton, Jr. on May 13, 1933.

Nellie and James had a fourth daughter, Thelma Arlene Fox, on June 29, 1934, at Hollis, Kansas.

Bill and Margaret had a daughter, Wilma Lee Chritton, on July 26, 1934.

Lynn and Laura had a baby, Ava Chritton, on June 14, 1935, at Concordia Kansas. They later had another daughter, Lida, whose birth date is unknown.

Nellie and James’ fifth daughter, Carolyn Joyce Fox, was born November 7, 1936, at Hollis, Kansas.

Bill and Margaret had a daughter, Shirley Chritton, on March 7, 1938.

Al died on March 29, 1938 at the age of 78. He collapsed in the yard while chopping wood. The coroner noted the cause of death as "Natural Causes - Heart Attack probably (Fell dead in own yard)" His son Bill is listed as the informant on the death certificate. Albert Herman Chritton is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church just up the road from the Chritton home.

After her husband’s death, 64-year-old Lou did not have a source of income. She spent later years living with various members of her family. She was an active member of the household, cooking, cleaning, making dresses, and passing her time by crocheting useful and decorative items. According to her obituary, she initially moved to California, presumably living with family, and returned to Kansas after five years.

In 1939, Lou’s youngest child, Charles “Charley” Chritton, married Marie Carver.

Lou’s sister Mary Ellen (Hogg) Garst died at age 80 on February 14, 1940, in Clarinda, Iowa. Her obituary in the Winterset Madisonian lists her surviving siblings, all of whom except Lou are listed as living in (or at least near) Concordia, Kansas. Lou is listed as living in California. The surviving siblings are Lou, George Hogg, Albert Hogg, Elizabeth Conn, and “Mrs. Lee Wright.”

Charley and Marie’s oldest child, Clarence Chritton, was born on May 21, 1940.

Nellie and James’s last child and first son, Ronald Dean Fox, was born on December 27, 1940, at Hollis, Kansas.

Bill and Margaret had another daughter, Barbara Chritton, on April 21, 1941.

Charley and Marie had a son, Douglas Henry Chritton, on April 23, 1942. Another son, Albert, was born a few years later.

Bill and Margaret’s youngest child, Erma Chritton, was on April 26, 1942.

April 22, 1943: Lou’s granddaughter, Nellie “Marie” Fox, married Lawrence Edward Kinney at Newton, Kansas.

June 11, 1944: Lou’s brother George Washington Hogue died at age 74 in Cloud County, Kansas.

On December 26 1945, Lou moved to Wichita, Kansas, to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Ora “Mae” and Leamon Moot.  She began keeping a daily diary on January 1, 1946. This diary itself is a small pocket-sized book labeled “Five Year Diary.” Each page is labeled with a day of the year and is divided into five small sections to be filled in over consecutive years, leaving room for just two or three sentences per day. Lou’s diary entries continue for more than four years, ending on January 10 1950. Her diary is currently being transcribed in sections on the Chritton History website.

On January 20 1946, her grandson Jack Huscher left for his deployment in the Navy. “I sure hate to see Jackie go,” she wrote. “He will be a long way from home.”

In her later years, she suffered from a goiter, caused by a thyroid condition. That spring, she began nearly daily trips to the doctor for treatments. While it’s not clear what the treatments entailed, they seemed to cause her to feel ill. She records dozens of visits to the doctor between April 11 and June 21 1946.

In the summer of 1946, Lou traveled to visit her family and friends in Concordia, Kansas, and southern Missouri. Late June was spent visiting in Kansas, and she traveled to Missouri in time for Independence Day where her sons William “Bill” and Charles “Charley” were living with their families. “Bill’s and I went to Charley’s and had dinner and ice cream and cake. Yum, it was good,” she wrote on July 4, 1946.

Lou’s great grandson, Lawrence Kinney, Jr. was born to Nellie “Marie” and Lawrence Kinney on June 7, 1947, in Fort Lee, Virginia.

She died on November 9, 1950 in Concordia Kansas. She was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, near Olden, Missouri, along with many other members of the Chritton family, including her husband Albert.

The Concordia (KS) Blade-Empire published her obituary on November 9th 1950. The obituary includes several details of which seem to be in error, including the place of her birth, the name of her husband, and the length of time spent in California.
